Now, how do you think you, as teachers of a foreign language, should conceptualize, develop, and put into operation your testing procedure in your classes. What could be the best possible way to make sure you are testing what you teach?

Constraints in developing a test
I remember one of my professors at the University of El Salvador... he gave us a quiz with two questions, and three possible grades: 0, 5 or 10. Looking back, I cannot tell you what a relief I felt when I had quizzes or tests in other classes that offered me more than 2 questions!

I have heard about those kind of quizzes Mr. Lopez is mentioning. but for me it is a way to evaluate among others. answering to the questions I can be sure of what I'm testing when I include what I have taught in the easiest way possible. Moreover, our tests should not be too short but not too long. And they should include matching, multiple choice and short answer questions so that students can feel confortable solving the exam.

I think that to make sure that we are testing what we are teaching we have to test in the shortest time possible in that way we include what we have taught recently. Also in the quizzes we have to include different techniques as Julio said...

I totaly agree with my peers.I think that short test are better for students to solve and even for us as teachers, due to is easy for us to check them. multiple choice, yes/no answer and matching are the ones students like the most.

I think that the students should be in constant evaluation during the class. So, at the moment of taking a test the experience can be less stressful. Also, they need to familiar with the type of test that we are applying to them. e.g. (matching, multiple choice and short answer questions etc.)
ReplyDeleteIn order to know if we are testing what we taught we have to check our objectives and our evaluation tools (exam, quiz, presentation etc.) Our test have to measure if our objective was achieved or not. As result our objectives and test have to be realted. We can not pass a gap-filling reading test if our objective is evaluated listening
comprehension.

Testing and teaching are not separate entities, because testing is an integral part of teaching. As teachers we tend to use tests to monitor what has been previously learned by the students and to measure the effectiveness of instruction . On the other hand,I think that frequent testing of what have previously taught helps studentst to retain more content, reduces test anxiety, and aids their own monitoring of their progress. Raquel.
ReplyDeleteCareful out there... we are in dangerous territory mixing testing and evaluation... we can evaluate without testing, right?
ReplyDeleteok testing if I am not wrong is for noticed or realized students knowledge what they have learned and evaluation is to analize what they have learned and determine students a grade. for us quizzes are important because that give us an idea about students learning and based on that we can grade our students

In my opinion I consider that we are testing in every single class. One way to notice if teachers are testing is to make the wrap - up at the end of the class.

I am of those with the idea of evaluating students everytime we can because students forget things quickly. By evaluating them constantly, For example; right the next class after a previous session, with a warm up asking questions about the topic seen previously. And why not pass a short test from time to time to see how students are doing. Also, it can contribute to the meaningful learning in students.

ReplyDeleteI agree with many of partnre's comentes but we like a teachers have a task very hard when we teach a second language because it's true we can taesting in a hand paper but we can evaluate in diferent ways too. Like for example in a conversation, a reading comprehension, etc but i think that many of you are forgetting that the teacher that teach a second language in a public school or a private school is more dificult to him/her to evaluate the four habilities because the groups are too big to concentrate in a specific area. So we have to find a way to evauating and test at the same time.
