The TOEFL test for example measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand North American English as it is spoken, written and heard. Consequently, the measurement of candidate’s responses is important in order to rank his or her proficiency in the second language.

ReplyDeleteI think that this is the most important part when talking about language assessment.
Psychometrics has to do with how we score a student in different ways. We can compare the scores among other students or we can score each student according to the level.

Educational measurement is very important for language assessment because it involves things such as rating and proficiency scales, vocabulary and grammar tests, teacher observation and many more tools to measure the student's ability on L2. Also, It is not just to apply the instruments above mentioned but the most important thing is that they help us to identify errors on students, to find out about the level they manage on the second laguage, things that would tell us if they are ready to interact with the second laguage itself in term of culture, fluency, proficiency and simulated or real situations.

The TOEFL is an excelent example of language assessment, it seems to be like the most reliable and valid way to know about the students' proficiency on the target language. However, let us remember that there are more kinds of assessment like achievement, diagnostic, placement and aptitude tests. Therefore, we should put specific attention to achievement test, end of a course,for example, because they are the base to have a successful proficiency test which is the TOELF.

The main concern of educational measurement is to make assessment more rational, efficient and technically defensible. In this sense, it is necesary to ensure the information generated by testing instruments and the data that result from the use of tests with the highest quality possible.

Language testing differs from testing in other content areas because language teachers have more choices to make and evaluate assessment. for example: true-false, matching, and multiple-choice assessments, portfolios, etc.we can measure written or oraly sudents profiency. the goog stuff of this type of education measurement is that teachers provide feedback based on the assessment results
