Look at this rubric, the instructions and the requirements and tell me:
1. What works.
2. What can be improved.
3. What does not work.

This Blog is for students at UDB enrolled in the course "Testing and Evaluation in Foreign Language Teaching"
In my opinion the rubric works but not at all. It has two aspects that are necessary to evaluate like pronunciation and accuracy of assignment and timing. In case of preparation, I do not agree with that. It does not have to do for the purpose of the assignment because it says that student will record specific situations not to tell a story or learn an article and say a summary. So I would not expect my students to read in a recording their own information because what they have to do is to say about themselves.

However we need to take into consideration some other aspects if we are evaluating speaking. One aspect that teacher can evaluate would be sound quality, it is necessary to listen to the recording carefully and hear if it is clear with no background noise. Another aspect would be speak clearly if the students do not forget a word or get confused with some other words or mispronounce. According to the instruction it says that students will use the vocabulary that they have studied in class. So we must evaluate that part of vocabulary, if the students use the appropriate vocabulary.

I think that the rubric is very well designed and consistent with the guidelines that were given to the students. The lists of criteria that the rubric contains are appropriated for scoring the recording assessment. I think that the three main points for scoring the recording have clearly defined levels of achievements and performance. Also, I think that the judgments for each level are objective. The levels describe very clearly the aspects that are going to be scored by the teacher.
ReplyDeleteI would not change a thing from the rubric because I think that the elements that contains are important for assessing the recording.

For example for me is very obvious that the teacher has to assess the process that the students follow through the recording in order to have a good product. Also, it is very important to assess the students’ pronunciation and how accurate their performance in the recording is, and of course the teacher has to assess if the students rehearsed and prepared themselves before the recording because that was the purpose of the assignment.
ReplyDeleteI like the rubric very much; it is not too extended or complex that for me as a teacher is great because we can go directly to the points that we want to assess without getting lost in irrelevant points.
Also, I think that the rubric is going to be a positive feedback for the students because when they get their score they will be able to see and understand the aspects that they need to work on and polish for future assignments.

What works is the clear instruction the teacher is giving the student in order to have a good presentation. For me they are understandable and easy to follow. the guidelines of the rubric are clear and I can see that the difference amongst the levels it's noticiable. However, for me it is kind of disorganized. the generalities like name, date, teacher and topic are missing according to what I see. So, it should be better organized because the categories and levels of proficiency are confusing. So, in my opinion the content is good but the design should be fixed.

rubrics really help teachers not only in time but also in grade his/her students. in my opnion this scoring sheet works, because you can evaluate your students and provide them imdediatly spoken feedback. students will not where are the areas they are having problems in order to do not doing again. it also categorize/ evaluate in grades.

a rubric is a scoring guide used in subjective assessments. it works for many evalauating process like presentations, essays, assessments. Judgments can be self-assessments by students. it allows self-assimilation in what students have failed and what they need to improve. rubrics can work as a guide for teachers because all the evaluation criteria can be there as the most important and main points, although there will be others that can be exclude. rubrics can really be a valiable and realiable guide? the teacher most of the teachers can create it others can donwload it for internet, so it can vary. in my opinion can work 50% and 50% percent. due to it can affect students grade and it can not realiable always. the good thing about this is that students see their mistakes like pronunciation, intonation, vocabulary and grammar. areas on which can be sharpen.

For me the task assigned to students has the goals clearly specified and requires the students to consider a number of contents. The criteria for the evaluation is clear and understandable, but should be more specific and a extended because the task format is too varied and long. Raquel
