Evaluation or Testing?

Please read the materials before posting. Do not repeat what others say.

What are the differences between evaluation and testing? How do we know when one happens and not the other? Which one do I use in my classes?

  1. test is an individual instrument that teachers use which purpose is measure students knowledge, skills, abilities, etc. in a specific area or content. on the other hand evaluation is the analysis and comparison of the actual progress. we evaluate the information teachers need. i mean in order to evaluate you have to pass a test to the students in order to evaluate and give a grade.

  2. The differences between evaluation and testing are the following: Evaluation has to do with the assessment of the whole teaching and learning process and its aim is to improve the existing condition of the process. On the other hand testing just has to do with designing, planning and submit a test to the students in order obtain information about a specific station of leaning.
I know that evaluation happens in every single class with the development of different teaching methods and techniques that help me to improve the teaching learning process. Also, I know that testing just happens in a specific time of a course, when I need to measure if my students have reached the objective of the course.
Of course, I use both of them but as I said before each one in a specific time of the process.

  3. Not quite. We can evaluate without testing.

  4. Evaluation is to assess the learning process. Testing is a tool that helps teachers to mesuare the learning process.
Yes, we can evaluate without testing. Evaluation is a judgement or assessment that teachers do everytime. Testing is part of it. However it becomes subjective, so testing helps teachers to be objective.

  5. Testing is a technique or source that the teachers use to measure knowledge on students. It is also used to gather information on a given topic. Its objective is to give a grade to the performance shown in the test.
Evaluation goes later when we as teachers have gathered information in the tests. That information is useful to see what decisions we have to make in order to improve our and students performance in the future.

  6. I forgot to say that the teacher of this subject and us, we both use testing and evaluation. Teacher Nelson uses testing when he gives us tests like the one from "testing cycle". For sure he wants to measure our knowlege. And he uses evaluation when he reads our comments and gathers info about our test and then he made a desicion about the whole process, like when he sent us an email showing his concern about the work we as student are doing. Isn't it true?

  7. Testing is the planning, designing, giving to students and scoring. So, tests help us find information about students' performance or ability in a different skill. It measures the students' knowledge. Also it requires that both the teacher and the students get involved in the process. Evaluation on the other hand, is when the teacher, based on the results in the testing process, makes decisions on what can be improved. It also requires the teacher and students' involvement.

  8. I understand that evaluation collects and interprets information for making judgments about students learning and achievement. The teacher judges the merit of the learning and performance based on the data. On the other hand, testing provides the basis for grading students performance and also is used to identify student's knowledge and skills.Testing enable the teacher to gear the instructions to the learner's needs. With the information gathered from testing, the teacher can also plan the instruction better.Testing also help to place learners in the appropriate course or level. Raquel

  9. Evaluation has to do with the teacher’s judgment about the students’ knowledge, and it measure the students’ abilities in a broad way. On the other hand, testing is an instrument that gathers data about one specific skill in order to establish evidence of the students’ learning.

  10. I made a mistake in my previous comment I said that in testing the teacher and students are involved, what is not true, but in testing the only one involved is the teacher and in evaluation the students and teachers are involved. Testing help us to make judgements about a student's performance, it measures a student's ability or knowledge in a specific area, and the results can be grade..

  11. Hmmm... I tend to think that the students are also involved in testing, since they take the test, don't they?

  12. Of course they are involved. If they were not, it would be impossible to gather data of their learning.

  13. I think that evaluting is when you evaluate all the aspects in the studetns like for example if he/she participate in the class, do the home extra assigment,do the exercises during the class, the behavior in the classroom, the attention during the partners' opinions etc. and testing is when you pass a hand pen test or they do an oral presentation. For me all the aspect before help me to give a grade to my students. Evelin Trejo
