Testing -your way...

Two things in this blog.

1. Tell me how you would use technology in your classes when testing. Tell me about the difficulties you are likely to find in an environment like the one in El Salvador. Keep in mind that testing does not refer to quizzes and exams only.

2. Post questions about the assignment here.

  2. I don’t have many difficulties in using technology for testing purposes because Don Bosco School has good recourses that teachers and students can use. I use technology in listening assessments, (the tape recorder) the school wed site, the audio-visual rooms for videos, and the computer lab for assessing the four macro-skills. But know that I have those facilities because the school is a private institution; in public school things are really different and the use of technology in an English class is just something impossible.

  3. I would assign my student an specific document to read on the internet. for example, read a novel, make a summary about grammar topics. study the structure of an essay and write an essay. Also, I would send my students some reading comprenhension questions. etc. This can be done with internet as a wonderful and useful tool, Quia is an example to do that.
There would be some problems because there are always students who do not pay attention to specific indications, they forget about due days, etc. Also, internet technologies overwhelm students' skills on computers. I know some friends who do not do their homework just becuase they could not download a file or did not find the web page required to do the job, etc.

  4. I was thinking in a large scale in my previous comment becuase if we talk about public school which are a great number in comparison with private schools they don't even have english books to work in class, the only source of knowledge is the teacher and the material prepared for the class. Lucky the schools that have a cannon, a radio, an english lab, an internet to take advantage of. but let us face reality, if our students do not have those facilities our work as teacher would be twice more difficult. This comment is in agreement to Fatima's.

  5. Magdalena,

The exercise is to create a 10 question quiz.

It is true... the inability to follow instructions is not what makes using technology inadequate, but rather the inability to work independently. Don't you think?

  8. I would create my own page using the internet we as teachers have a great tool in technology. There are some useful and amazing web pages that teachers can use for the classes like quia or trackstart.
In those web pages students can practice grammar, listen to a recording and complete an activity, or students can also practice vocabulary and others. Technology can help students to improve their knowledge.

  9. However in El Salvador there are teachers that they do not know how to turn the computer on. Also in El Salvador most of the students do not have a computer. So it is kind of difficult to apply the technology in this country.

  10. Yeah, Mr. Lopez. Some students just hate the computer and internet. Internet is a wonderful tool. Being in a class does not allow you to study deeply some topics, but on the web you can read related topics about the assigments we have to do and the knowlegde is more meaningful. However, internet stresses me from time to time.

  11. i dont have any problem on using technology, on the contrary I will use it. we are in a new technological era, on which tech is part of us. I will take advantage from tech. there are several educational pages on which will support our classes, even students will like it. but unfortunately in El Salvador not all the shools have access to tech, and we will continue in the traditional education, not in a creative, motivate, and interactive way of teaching. also a english lab will be help in those areas with as teachers dont have chance to help students.

  12. there are a lot disadvantages in tech, like we are sure if students did the assigment, they copy and paste, someone else do it, they really have learned smth or even we can lost the information/ grades of our students. we have a huge tool which is tech, we can save time and money rather in paper and pen test. our country will take into account that tech must be a great tool for education. I like it and definitevely i will use it.but what about those students whom do not have a computer at home or access to internet, that will be a disadvantage for students, it would be nice that school provides access for those students dont have access to this tools and they will be use them. defitively tech can cause stress but at the same time can help us in many ways not only in education but also in save time, that will depends of the use we make for using tech. silvia

  13. I think that for us as L2 teachers is very important to use technology in our classes because it is the only way in which we can expose our students to real English materials. I know that in El Salvador only private institutions can offer thier students this facilities but also, in some public schools called (esculas 10) the goverment is equiping the schools with multimedia projectors, computer labs with access to internet, tape recorders, and istitutional web pages, but the goverment is not giving teacher a proper preration or training. As a result, they can not use these resources in thier classes.

  14. There are tools almost for everything. There are tools to send voice messages online (voicethread), there are tools to detect plagiarism (turnitin), or even tools to read what a student wrote. Some of these are available with a charge... and that's when the problem begins... if you had to pay $50 a year per tool... you'll end up spending a lot of money!

  15. NOOOOOO!!! I think i won't do it, I don't have the possibilities to pay that amount of money!!!!

  16. Maybe I will use technology by asking my students to look for a specific web page and practice about the grammar that has been studied in the class, and then they would send that to my e-mail for checking. Also, at school we have the English lab, and students have lab session every other week, so they practice some vocabulary and grammatical structures. I think that we are lucky to have many tools at school that can be used to help our students in their learning process and understand better. On the other hand the public situation is not the same as private schools, some of the public schools lack of the tools that are necessary to help students in their learning process.

  17. Technology is an amplifier of natural abilities that brings discovery, excitement, and even fun to the classroom. As teachers we all know that students are perfectly capable of learning on their own, but they naturally learn better with help from objects they find in the world around them, and it is important to count with a kind of technology to help them learn. In classrooms, the use of textbooks, flash cards, posters, maps, audio-visual aids, digital cameras and computers are particularly rich resourses that meet the learners needs. Unfortunately, in our country a lot of schools do not have the support of technology in their classrooms. In some schools, the students do not even have chairs to sit and their financial resources are very low. I think that, if our students are entering in a world and a business environment defined by the use of technology, then we need to find ways to use at least the basic resources. Raquel

  18. Technology is amazing!!! I did not know that there are many different tools for teachers in order to use in classes or to make evaluations. However it is necessary to have trainings about technology (computer, internet, e-mail, tools in internet, etc) teachers must be updated! Nowadays our students know more about technology than teachers.
